November 19, 2015It was reported last week that Vizio smart TVs track user activity and viewing habits and report them to advertisers. This tracking is referred to by the company as “Smart Interactivity” and is turned on by default, so users must manually opt-out of the feature to turn it off.
November 17, 2015Over the weekend, reddit was blocked in Turkey. The Turkish government blocked the site with little explanation, listing on an official site: “After technical analysis and legal consideration … administration measure has been taken for this website.”
November 15, 2015A new show on the USA Network called Mr. Robot just wrapped up its first season. The show is about a cyber-security expert (Elliot) who hacks and busts “bad guys” as a hobby, and is ultimately recruited to join an underground hacker organization working to bring down corporate America. Elliot then encounters the anarchist Mr. Robot, and the show follows their efforts in hacking and fighting evils together. You can learn more here.
November 13, 2015The DPA said Facebook hadn’t adequately answered questions about how it collects and tracks non-Facebook users that visit its site. As a result, Belgium ruled Facebook can “no longer collect and store online information from Belgian residents who do not have Facebook accounts.”

November 5, 2015It allows France to conduct mass surveillance on an international scale. The bill, called the “Proposition de loi relative aux mesures de surveillance des communications électroniques internationals,” was ratified last week and also includes provisions for data retention.
November 1, 2015The Senate passed CISA (the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act) yesterday, a surveillance bill that’s been packaged as a “cybersecurity” initiative. The bill is highly controversial and has faced strong opposition from privacy advocates and tech companies, as it poses extreme threats to privacy.
